Spoken Word Poetry
- Performance-Based: Unlike traditional poetry, slam poetry emphasizes performance. Poets use tone, gestures, facial expressions, and pacing to enhance the impact of their words.
- Original Works: Participants perform their own poems, often written specifically for the slam.
- Audience Engagement: The audience plays a crucial role, sometimes scoring the performances or showing approval through reactions like snaps, claps, or cheers.
- Time Limit: Poets typically have 2–3 minutes to perform their poem, adding pressure to convey their message concisely.
- Informal and Expressive: Slam poetry is often rawer, expressive, and direct than traditional forms, and it can tackle contemporary issues or personal narratives.
